Is Wicked and Son of a Witch not just a kind of fanfiction? Any thoughts ?

Well I know Wicked is an allegory like its predecessor, The Wizard of Oz. I haven't read Son of a Witch so I don't have any information readily available on it. If you want to know what kind of symbolic representation they may have, try an online search. It could definitely prove more informative than what I provide.

Here's a little bit of what I know and think...

I know at the time The Wizard of Oz came out, it was suppose to be symbolic of the America's political atmosphere at that time and some say it represents a similar political climate of what's going on in America's present.

The issues that arise in Wicked are suppose to be more modern but in my opinion are periodic in America's history. For example those who are persecuted in the book are symbolic of anyone or group are not considered the norm or mainstream in America, such as the gay community. The animals who were able to speak then they weren't able to speak symbolized many of the disadvantage and/or minority groups in America who begin to have their rights taken away and their voices silenced in the name of "Goodness". The wicked witch symbolizes terrorist. I don't think the author had any continuity with the symbolism that was present in The Wizard of Oz.

It's way more in depth than what I have provided, I've read Wicked and seen the play and they were both great.
