The End that Started the Beginning

She had been running through the forest for hours, her eyes blinded by tears, her thoughts and actions by pain. Why was she running in the first place? She had seen a little family of kitsune pups that had just lost their mother, they looked os helpless. Kagome helped them to a village she knew of where an old miko took in demon children and human children alike. But after that she had broke down and ran, the small pups reminding her too much of her late son.
The further and longer she ran, the more the forest blurred into a never-ending landscape of greens and browns. She didn't know where she was going, but she really didn't care. As long as she could escape the pain, she would run forever.
She ran deeper into the forest until an ever-loving tree root that seemed to always be there tripped her and she fell face first onto the forest floor. She let out a sigh of frustration as she struggled to get up. When her ankle, on cue, started to throb she just gave up. As she looked around, she noticed that she was completely unfamiliar with this part of the forest, but she wasn't surprised. She had been running aimlessly for Kami knows how long, so being lost was just an added bonus.
As she sat there she began to think about her life and how pathetic it had become since she had been pulled into that well that day. Even though she was trying to think of how bad it was, she couldn't help but think of all the good that had come out of it also. She had gained a bond with four people that was deeper than the deepest ocean, and that lasted longer than forever. Now it was all gone, and she could never get it back, no matter how much she wished it to be otherwise.
She had met a hot tempered hanyou that was rough, rude, and violent; but at the same time, caring considerate, and kind when he wanted to be. She had befriended a lecherous monk with a black hole in his hand that looked death in the face every day with a smile; that contained wisdom way beyond his years and carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. She had met her sister, an orphaned tajiya whose only companion was a fire neko and whose only comfort was the fact that her brother still lived, even if he was under the influence of evil. An orphaned kitsune had come to her in search of comfort and she given it to him ten fold. After a couple of months, he became her adoptive son and she loved him with all her being. And now, they were gone, except Inuyasha.

It had been fine. After they had defeated Naraku, Miroku and Sango had finally gotten married and Sango was pregnant with their fourth child. Inuyasha had continued to live with her along with Shippou, who was now almost as tall as she was. Her and Inuyasha were still friends, but Kagome could tell that he was still debating on who to choose. There were times when he would take her away to some romantic he'd discovered and they would just spend hours with each other, talking and laughing and enjoying each other's company.
During some of these times they got caught up in the moment and ended up having a make out session, but it never went farther than that. After these little getaways, he would always distance himself from her and treat her coldly, and this just happened to be one of those times. But she didn't let it bother her because her sister and brother were coming and that's all that mattered.
Sango and Miroku had been visiting from the demon exterminator village to celebrate the conceiving of their fourth child when a rouge bear demon bounded out of the forest shouting, "The Shikon no Tama! Where is the Shikon no Tama?!" He turned in Kagome's direction and sneered, saliva dripping from his decaying teeth. "If you hand over the jewel now, I'll try to make it less painful when I eat you," he spat.
Kagome was shaking in fear but his threats did nothing to her resolve. This was the third demon in a week and her patience was wearing thin. Instead of dignifying him with a response, Kagome just notched an arrow and aimed it at his heart. His eyes flicked from the arrow to her eyes and what he saw was frightening, but no bitch with an arrow was going to get between him and the ultimate power.
She watched his vision flicker and she let a satisfied smirk grace her features. But that smirk vanished as soon as it appeared when a blood curdling scream pierced the air like a bullet. She whirled around to find Sango collapsing on the ground, blood spurting from her stomach. She hadn't even seen the demon move from the forest edge to anywhere near Sango.
But before she could ponder how that happened, another shreik filled the air. Kagome whirled arpnd with wide eyes at the sight before her. The beard demon had managed to move away from where sango was and now had Shippou in his grasp, dangling him very close to his teeth. Kagome paled until she could've been transparent.
"Let him go! He's just a child!" she exclaimed her heart racing akmost as fast as her feet. The demon just sneered, blowing his fould breath on Shippou, a wide fera; smirk on his face.
"Do you have ties to thid kit? Well you are the first human I've ever seen take a kitsune for a pet, do you know hpw degrading that is for the demonic race?" he snarled, tred eyes flashing. "I'll make it so that you have no control over him or any other demon!" Kagome closed her eyes and readied herself for the blow she was sure was going to come, but it didn't.
"MAMMAAAAAAAAAAAA!" was the only thing she heard as the bear dropped Shippou's lifeless form to the ground where his blood pooled around him. The world she knew shattered around her like a broken mirror, and the pieces fell like shining daggers, piercing her repeatedly. She staggered over to her son, not believing what just happend. Her son couldn't be dead, it just wasn't possible, it couldn't happen. She looked at him, his body barely identifiable through all the blood and entrails. She picked what was left of him up and cradled him, whispering words of comfort and apologies.
"Kaze no Kizu!" The slashes of light came forth from seemingly nowhere and tore the demon apart, but it was just a distant echo in the recesses of Kagome's mind. To her nothing mattered except the mangled body that had once been her son. She slowly, ever so slowly, put her ear to his chest to listen for a heart beat, all the while hoping that this wasn't happening, that this was just some twisted nightmare and that Inuyasha would say, "Get up wench we ain't got all day!" and nudge her with his foot.
She stayed like that, with her now bloody ear against his mangled chest, feeling the last bit of warmth, of life, slip away into the clutches of death. Tears stung the backs of her eyes as they scalded her cheeks. She was so wrapped up with him that she didn't notice Inuyasha come up behind her and place a clawed hand gently on her shoulder. She looked up at him, her form practically radiating sadness and despair.
He gently pried Shippou from her arms and took him away, not listening to her strangled sobs. He knew that this was hard for her to digest, hell, even he was crying at the loss of what he could call a son. But he knew what had to be done and so did she, so the only thing left was to do it.
After they had buried Sango and Shippou, Inuyasha asked where Miroku was, and as if on cue there was an explosion and a strangled cry. They didn't have to think because they already knew. Miroku had let his Kazanna suck him in because he couldn't stand the prospect of life without Sango. Neither Kagome nor Inuyasha heard Miroku say this, but they both knew it in their hearts.
They went into the forest to the crater that was his grave and cried, both of them, Kagome being held in Inuyasha's arms as she sobbed into his chest, Inuyasha burying his nose in her hair and letting the tears drip down. They didn't move from that spot until dawn came the next morning, it was then that they held a proper funeral for their deceased family, and after that they built themselves a hut a ways from the village by Kagome's request, being in the actaul village itself would cause too much pain.

After Sango and Miroku's children were told, Kagome began to draw into herself, drifting further and further into a void, not giving any signs that she would return. She was so blinded by sadness that she didn't notice the changes everyone around her were going through. In the end, she wound up alone, but by choice and was happy to keep it that way.

She slowly crawled to the base of a tree and leaned her head against the rough bark, as
silent tears streaked down her face. It was still so fresh in her mind, the images so vivid, that she could recount the whole event in extreme detail. and as much as she wanted to forget it, she couldn't because it would dishonor her friends and she would lose a big part of herself, something that she couldn't afford with so little of herself left.
