Epiphany
Picture information
Description:
His hand rested on her cheek. It was warm and flushed pink. No longer was it cold and white. Death had been banished. Sesshoumaru stared down at the priestess, an odd occurrence overwhelming him to the point his logical mind was unable to rationalize. His heart continued to hammer in his chest and he vaguely wondered if it was going to tear out of it. His long talons shrunk back to their usual three inch long length, his youki calming, yet he could not shake off it.
For once in his seven century life span, the dog demon had been scared. It was not a fear born for his survival but for this small mortal who currently looked up at him, her sapphire eyes sparkling. He had lost her and, to his shock, it had triggered a reaction he had long presumed he could not have.
He had cared and had felt an agonizing sense of failure. He had failed to protect her.
"Sesshoumaru." He heard her softly say his name.
His honey orbs peered down at her, their usually inanimate depths flashing. He watched her smile gently at him and felt her small hand rest on his chest, exactly over his still pounding heart.
"Thank you."
Her words seemed to echo in his ears. Thank you. She was thanking him for saving her yet for some reason, he felt that her thanks was not needed. For some inexplicable reason, the daiyoukai felt when he had revived Higurashi KAgome, he had been doing so not for her sake but for his. Because when she died, he had had an epiphany. Though she was annoying, loud, temperamental, illogical and clumsy, this small mortal priestess had managed to barrage through the icy fortifications around his heart and touch it.
His face remained stoic yet his golden gaze blazed. He hadn't saved her out of a sense of duty or pity. He had saved something he wanted to protect and when he had revived her, he had somehow managed to revive the small piece of him she had managed to mark.
